About the Choir

236_sqFor 30 years the award-winning Bath Camerata has been making music for the pleasure of audiences in the UK and abroad.

We have performed with The Three Tenors, the Tallis Scholars, I Fagiolini, Britten Sinfonia, Joanna MacGregor, Paco Peña and Brian Eno. We have been regular guests at the Bath Festival, and have been invited to perform at major world venues, from Wigmore Hall and St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, to the Thomaskirche, Leipzig and Orlando Cathedral, Florida.

Bath Camerata has won a number of prizes, including BBC Adult Choir of the Year, and has worked with such esteemed conductors as Sir Roger Norrington, Richard Hickox, Paul McCreesh, and Nigel Perrin, its founding director. The choir has given numerous premieres, including a commission from the celebrated Sir James MacMillan, and has an extensive discography. “To Music”, a CD of German Romantic part-songs, was chosen as the Gramophone magazine’s Critic’s Choice.

Since the appointment in 2015 of its young and formidably talented new musical director, Benjamin Goodson, Bath Camerata has been receiving rave reviews, continuing to fulfil the title often used to describe it: one of the foremost chamber choirs in the country.

Benjamin Goodson

Since accepting the position of musical director of Bath Camerata in 2015, Benjamin Goodson has forged a strong and focused path of making music, attracting and fostering new talent, and exploring new fields of music and performance.

Benjamin Goodson is musical director of Bath Camerata, assistant conductor of the Grammy award-winning Rundfunkchor Berlin, and chorus master at Dorset Opera Festival. His performances are praised for their musicality, expressiveness and clarity.

While studying at the University of Oxford, Goodson was awarded the University’s top conducting prize. Four years after graduating he became Oxford’s youngest Director of Music. Goodson has studied conducting with some of the world’s foremost teachers, including Sir Colin Davis, Paul Spicer and Ulrich Windfuhr.

Bath Camerata is Recruiting!

We are currently seeking one BASS to join our line up of 24 singers. We are always also pleased to hear from singers looking to join our dep list.

You will be an experienced chamber choir singer with excellent sight-reading skills, who is committed to rehearsing and performing at the highest level.  We can offer exciting and challenging musical opportunities in a wide variety of styles – we sing everything from early music to world premieres, from classical to jazz, both a cappella and with professional orchestras.  Bath Camerata appears at prestigious festivals all over the UK, including the Bath Festival. Next season will include filming a documentary for the BBC, recording three new large-scale commissions, performing Bach St John Passion with James Gilchrist, a tour to Berlin, and our usual mix of concerts at UK festivals and venues.

We rehearse in central Bath on a small number of Monday & Tuesday evenings immediately before a performance, and on the occasional Saturday morning. And we’re often to be found in the local pub after rehearsals!
